CableLabs® Sets Five Top-Level Promotions—Dulchinos to SVP; Kuska to Head DOCSIS®

New Security Group Formed

Louisville, Colorado, March 29, 2005—CableLabs has announced a series of top-level executive advancements including new leaders in two key groups and the promotion of Don Dulchinos to Senior Vice President of Advanced Platforms & Services (APS).

Four others were promoted as well:

  • Michelle Kuska moves to Vice President of Broadband Access, leading the combined efforts of DOCSIS® cable modems and CableHome® home-networking initiatives.
  • Oscar Marcia is the new Vice President of Security at CableLabs, leading a newly formed security group.
  • David Broberg is promoted to Vice President, Consumer Video Technology, APS.
  • Jean-François Mulé is named to a new post as Vice President, IP Technologies and Services.

“Each of these individuals has exhibited strong leadership in their respective workings with our membership and with the supplier community,” said CableLabs President and CEO Dr. Richard R. Green. “With these new additions to our senior management, I can’t recall CableLabs ever having a stronger, more extensive talent pool at this top level,” he added.

Dulchinos, who formerly was VP of APS, is now tasked with extending the OpenCable™ architecture to incorporate new products, such as personal computers, and new capabilities, such as home networking. He also will be developing the OpenCable™ Application Platform (OCAP™) middleware project into a framework for interactive television services, incorporating enhanced television applications and broader programmer participation.

Kuska, who was one of the early participants in the cable modem development process that led to the creation of DOCSIS at CableLabs, was previously Director of Specifications and Architecture, Broadband Access (BA). She now heads the overall specification and test development for the DOCSIS and CableHome projects. These projects define the interfaces necessary to deliver high-speed data and home-networking services over cable systems.

Marcia, who is promoted from Chief Security Architect, provides direction and definition to specify and drive implementation of standards-based security mechanisms within the CableLabs community. He manages the CableLabs Digital Certificate Issuance service along with various security groups, including the internal CableLabs Security Advisory Committee and the CableLabs member companies’ Security Task Force.

Broberg, a long-time veteran of the consumer electronics industry, will be increasing his role in cross-project efforts involving compatibility with retail products, while having a greater influence on guiding and directing the key technology for next-generation cable-compatible product categories. His prior title was Director for OpenCable Requirements in the APS group.

Mulé, who was the lead architect for PacketCable™, will take on a new role focusing on enabling real-time IP communication services over cable broadband networks. He will relocate to Europe to serve as CableLabs interface with European CableLabs MSO members. Mulé now is responsible for steering the directions of IP technologies and protocol developments across the CableLabs research and development projects such as PacketCable, DOCSIS, and CableHome. He will be primarily focused on enabling real-time IP communication services over cable broadband networks. Mulé also leads CableLabs’ coordination efforts in standardization with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
